1. Choose the best keyword for your content

You may have already chosen the main keyword to your blog post, but you should always double check its rate of searches, competition, etc.

Google Keyword planner allows you to analyse the average monthly searches of a specific keyword or a group of, and analyze trends over the year.

Although it’s a tool designed for Adwords campaign building, you can use it to choose the best keyword for your content and the best moment to publish content on a specific topic.

Other cool tool you can use is MOZ Keyword Explorer, as it also shows you the best ranked content for that keyword.

2. Personalize your URL

This can be seen as an aesthetic thing but is more than that.

With your main keyword in the URL search engines will highlight it, making it more clickable.

Also a small and customized URL can be easier to remember.

3. Add the Keyword to your title and make sure to tag it as H1.

H1 is the most important tag on your Search Engine Optimization deck. You should add it only once per page, so use it wisely.

Wrap your title in [H1] and don’t forget to have your main keyword on it.

4. Secondary keywords on the first 100 words

Besides choosing your main keyword you should also consider some secondary keywords to help your rank.

A good trick is to add them in the beginning of the post, like a resume / introduction to what you are about to present, but be careful not to fall in Keyword stuffing.

5. Add the Secondary keywords to your subtitles.

To give more credit to the secondary keywords make sure to include them in your subtitles.

Breaking the text will make it more attractive to the reader and the website crawlers.

Also all the subtitles should be wrapped in H2 tags and subsequently H3 tags for points inside the subtitles.

Note: You can also give H4, H5 tags and so on, but that will only count to organize your reasoning as search engine bots don’t give much credit to them.

6. Add at least 2 outbound links (Preferably with higher rank than yours)

Give credit to your sources, mention websites that matter to your audience and that will help to support your arguments.

For example, you can use Alexa Rank.

7. Add 2 / 3 internal links

When creating a post always think in Quality over Quantity, but use at least 300 words.

Several studies mention that bigger posts get bigger engagement, that’s because a long post has more expressions of the keyword and a higher probability to be seen as an authority on the matter.

The downside is that if the content is not captivating at the beginning the reader will bounce fast.

Anyway, if you feel confident that you can catch your reader fast, you can go on the long post approach but first, read the 5th point once again 😉
